  17. Virtual Desktop is the answer to a growing problem among users of
  18.  
  19. modern Macintosh computers, who have plenty of RAM to run programs
  20.  
  21. in, but don‚Äôt have the ‚Äúscreen real estate‚Äù to handle large numbers of
  22.  
  23. windows productively.  This problem is especially acute for people using
  24.  
  25. PowerBook computers, because of their small screen size.

  31. Virtual Desktop, the premier virtual desktop manager for the Macintosh,
  32.  
  33. is an adaptation of the kind of virtual window manager found on many X
  34.  
  35. Window System workstations.  Having allocated some memory for
  36.  
  37. off-screen buffers, they let the user‚Äôs screen view move between
  38.  
  39. several ‚Äúrooms‚Äù where various programs can put their windows.

  41. Usually, these rooms are non-overlapping and arranged in a rigid grid
  42.  
  43. pattern.  A small-scale window shows the user where all the windows
  44.  
  45. are, in a stylized form.

  49. On the Macintosh, to date, there have been three successful solutions to
  50.  
  51. this problem.  The first, a commercial program using software
  52.  
  53. techniques, extended the desktop by scrolling it away when the user
  54.  
  55. shoved the mouse against the edge of the screen.  The second, a
  56.  
  57. shareware program with hardware dependencies, bought the user some
  58.  
  59. extra real estate by opening up the usually black area at the edges of the
  60.  
  61. monitor.  The third, an increasingly lucrative business, is the sale of
  62.  
  63. graphic display stations or expansion cards with hardware-based scroll
  64.  
  65. and zoom capability.

  69. Virtual Desktop has a number of advantages over these solutions.  First,
  70.  
  71. it‚Äôs free.  Second, it works on all types of monitors.  Third, it has a
  72.  
  73. sophisticated user interface.  Fourth, it takes advantage of Mac OS
  74.  
  75. features to do the whole job in the fewest possible clicks and keystrokes.

  97. Any Macintosh running System 7.0 or later can use Virtual Desktop.

  99. There is nothing special to install, but the first time you open Virtual
  100.  
  101. Desktop, it will ask for permission to install its own system extension,

  103. then suggest that you restart your Macintosh.  This system extension is
  104.  
  105. required in order for the application to operate.

  115. NOTE:  To work as it does, the program needs intimate knowledge of how
  116.  
  117. Finder works.  Because of this dependency, Virtual Desktop checks the
  118.  
  119. system version at startup, and if it finds itself in an unfamiliar version,

  121. it warns you and lets you decide whether to continue.  This version of
  122.  
  123. Virtual Desktop may someday be replaced by one which takes account of
  124.  
  125. changes in later versions of Finder.

  131. Finder, with the exception of one option which requires Finder.
